Instrumentation and Maintenance Fundamentals Practice Test

Predictive maintenance centers on monitoring the equipment’s condition with measurements and using that data to forecast when a component will fail, so maintenance can be done just before it fails. This relies on real-time or near-real-time indicators from sensors—like vibration, temperature, oil quality, wear debris, or electrical signatures—and analytics to estimate remaining useful life. That forward-looking, condition-based approach distinguishes it from other approaches.

It’s not simply performing tasks on a fixed schedule regardless of how the equipment is actually doing—that would be preventive maintenance. It’s not just relying on historical data alone, which wouldn’t capture the current state to predict future failures. And it’s not the same as corrective maintenance, which happens after a fault has occurred.
